Course Correction
Facing Reality
Dolly Sods didn’t turn out quite the way we had anticipated. We arrived Thursday evening around 4:30 prepared to hike to a nice winter destination and set up camp. We ascended to an area called Bear Rocks. As we climbed a howling wind kicked up in our faces. At the summit we encountered 50 mph winds that ripped through our clothing like a knife through butter.
It was time for a course correction. It was time for a reality check. We were prepared for sub-freezing temperatures. We were NOT prepared for 50 mph winds. We changed direction quickly.
Sometimes in life course corrections are very clear and obvious. More often than not they are muddy. Sometimes they are downright baffling. In any event they are necessary.
In the current environment there is a lot of insecurity about the direction of things. I see it every day in the businesses and individuals that I come into contact with. Much of this insecurity comes from having to change direction.
However, sometimes the change of direction leads to much better things than we ever anticipated. Often the ends are better than we could ever imagine. Jim Elliott once said “it is no fool that gives what he cannot keep to save what he’ll never lose.” Sometimes the thing we try to hang on to the most is the very thing we need to let go of.
Dolly Sods was not at all what I had planned (and anyone who knows me knows that the planning was impeccable – laminated maps and all). However, what I did get was much more than anticipated.
Is there a course correction that you need to make? Don’t wait for it to be forced on you. Make it today.
Keep moving forward,
Greg
